Homage to Magritte (1975)

Anita Thacher, born in 1940 and died in 2017, was a multi-media artist based out of New York City. Thacher received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Ford Foundation, American Film Institute, and more. Her artworks are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, J. Paul Getty Museum, Museum of Modern Art, and more. Here is one of her videos that is a one-minute excerpt from a 10-minute-long video. It begins with a scene where a window is in front of a mirror, and a woman walks into the frame to place a pitcher on the windowsill with her back and the pitcher reflected in the mirror. However, the mirror maintains her reflection for a moment after she leaves, as though the mirror is slow to catch up to reality. The woman returns to place decorative branches into the pitcher and turns around to briefly look at her reflection. The moment before she leaves, her reflection fades away, as does the pitcher and branches even though they are still there. Per the title, the video means to capture the surrealist imagery of René Magritte, especially his artworks that play with mirrors, such as “Not to Be Reproduced” and “The Key of Fields.”

Sin embargo, el espejo retiene su reflejo durante un instante después de que ella se marcha, como si tardara en ponerse al día con la realidad. La mujer regresa para colocar unas ramas decorativas en la jarra y se da la vuelta para mirar brevemente su reflejo. Justo antes de marcharse, su reflejo se desvanece, al igual que la jarra y las ramas, a pesar de que estas siguen allí.
