Horizontal Direction (1971)

Mixed media describes artworks where more than one material or medium is used. Here, L. Gates used black paint and mainly silvery metal attached to a wooden board using rivets to complete this piece in 1971. Over 20 large and small metal panels cut into unique shapes either lay over or beside another, creating depth and shadows. Note how pieces of metals are polished differently, creating various shades and lusters to add to the texture of the piece, resembling brushstrokes. The center of the artwork contains nine individual pieces of metal surrounded by an oval of black paint on the wood underneath and then larger metal sheets layered over another. Is it an eye? Or is it an overhead view of a body of water surrounded by earth? On each side are oblong shapes of metal, three on the left side and five on the right. Are they directions the eye is looking? Or are they rivers leading to the center? How many pieces of metal can you count overall? Though the piece appears simple, its abstract style allows viewers to draw their own meanings and interpretations.

Más de veinte paneles metálicos de distintos tamaños, cortados en formas únicas, se superponen o se colocan uno junto al otro, creando profundidad y sombras. Observe cómo las piezas de metal están pulidas de forma diferente, lo que genera diversas tonalidades y brillos que enriquecen la textura de la obra, asemejándose a pinceladas. El centro de la obra de arte contiene nueve piezas metálicas individuales rodeadas por un óvalo de pintura negra sobre la madera, y encima de estas hay láminas de metal más grandes superpuestas. ¿Es un ojo? ¿O es una vista aérea de una masa de agua rodeada de tierra?
