Sculptor Mac Whitney, born in 1936 in Kansas and died in 2025, is known for his large-scale, abstract steel sculptures which can be found all over Texas, such as at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas Sculpture Garden in Frisco, and here in Houston. This massive, 50-foot-tall steel sculpture painted red weighs approximately 50,000 pounds. Whitney was commissioned by the City of Houston in 1979 and installed in Stude Park in the Heights neighborhood in 1982. The abstract sculpture rests on four “feet” as two large pieces connect at the top, forming a sort of arrow. An arc connects to the main body at the base, and the upper portion of the main body features a thin diagonal beam that is welded to the upper point. Throughout the sculpture are rivets and screws with bolts, showing the industrial build of the piece that clashes with the greenery surrounding it. Abstract art allows for viewers to see something they may not immediately recognize in the artwork, so they must think of their own meaning rather than the artist giving one. For example, is this some sort of sign pointing to Downtown Houston? Is it a representation of Houston?
