Photography can be used to archive and/or keep moments, people, events, and buildings visible so that future generations can see them, even if they aren’t there or don’t exist anymore. In this case, Milstead Photography was hired to document this newly expanded, six-story, gray granite building for the portfolio of architecture firm S. I. Morris Associates. This firm is also known for many of Houston’s major buildings, such as The Astrodome, The Wortham Theater, Glassell School of Art, and others. This building would serve as the central library for the City of Houston and would later be named the Jesse H. Jones Central Branch Library in 1989. Note the photograph’s yellowed tint due to light damage. Photographs can age and change themselves. Compare this to the current Jones Central Branch Library and how it has changed since this photograph was taken, such as the addition of windows and moving a sculpture. The image has aged alongside the building.
