Houston, TX

This is a serigraph print, also known as silk-screen printing, by Marvin Ford where ink is forced through a fine screen using a rubber-bladed squeegee to spread the ink evenly, allowing ink to pass through the open spaces, onto paper. A different screen is used for each color. How many colors can you see in this serigraph? This print shows Houston through a circle on a square sheet of paper, like a camera lens or peephole in the sky that limits the viewer’s sight. As well, the bottom of the piece comes from a bird’s-eye view perspective, which is when an image seems to be as if though the viewer were a flying bird looking down, from a neighborhood in the foreground to the city skyline. However, a bar of clouds interrupts the view to then go into a worm's-eye view, when an image seems to be as if though the viewer were a worm looking up, from another neighborhood up to the city skyline. This artwork plays with perspective and angles to create a surreal, multi-layered image of Houston. Ford seems to have only made 50 of these prints, and this piece is number 18.
