About the Artwork:
Inner City (1996)
by Ibsen Espada

Painter Ibsen Espada, born in New York in 1952 and raised in Puerto Rico, moved to Houston in 1975. Before his death in 2025, Espada’s work has been included in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Texas Tech University, Art Museum of South Texas, Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, and many more. Here is one of his larger works, measuring eight feet high and 13 feet wide, that has many of Espada’s characteristics, such as paintings packed full of abstract energy, varying shapes, lines, and marks, and colors that both clash and work together. As well, Espada was known to attach paper to his canvases and mixing materials, this one being rice paper mounted on four canvases and painted with tempera and acrylic. The title of the artwork hints that this is an interpretation of city sprawl, using Cubist and Expressionist techniques. For example, streets, highways, and buildings are made with squares and cubes while various figures are painted with subjective perspectives rather than reality; one figure seems to be a drink cup with a straw that connects to a building while cacti either obscure or are obscured by barcodes or freeways.
