This bronze bas relief, which is a sculpture made by carving a design that slightly rises from its material, is set in a wall near the box office of the Jesse H. Jones Hall Plaza. It was created by Lawrence Monroe Ludtke, born in Houston in 1929, who was once a pitcher for the Brooklyn Dodgers before becoming a sculptor. Ludtke was a fellow with the US National Sculpture Society and a Member of the Royal Academy of British Sculptors whose works can be found at Johns Hopkins Medical School, Rice University, Texas A&M University, Lyndon Baines Johnson Presidential Library, the National Battlefield Park at Gettysburg, and more. This sculpture, measuring nearly 10 feet high and over three feet wide, shows Jesse H. Jones, a politician and entrepreneur who was the chairman of the National Bank of Commerce, publisher of the Houston Chronicle, the ninth US Secretary of Commerce, and the chairman of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation that stimulated economic recovery during the Great Depression. Born in Tennessee in 1874 and died in Houston in 1956, Jones started the Houston Endowment in 1937 to expand his philanthropic work. Jones Hall bears his name after an effort by his nephew, John T. Jones, Jr., to build it in his honor.
