Artists have used non-traditional materials to make artworks to explore concepts of artmaking and the creative process. Here is an artwork, measuring nearly seven feet tall and over three feet wide, made of burned matches on paper that shows a lamp. The outline of the lamp is made of burned matches while depth and shadows seem to be made with their ash. The burning matches caused smoke to damage the paper, causing the viewer’s eye to travel from the bottom to the top of the artwork. A lamp, a fixture that projects light, made of burnt matches, which provided light that extinguished into darkness, seems to make a statement on the interplay of light and darkness. This experimentation is indicative of The Art Guys, an artist duo of Michael Galbreth and Jack Massing who were conceptual artists whose collaboration spanned more than 35 years, from 1983 to 2019. They met as students at the University of Houston in the early 1980s and have been included in more than 150 exhibitions in museums, galleries, and public spaces throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia.
