Language of Evolving Trails (2015)

Kia Neill, born in Chicago in 1978, is a multi-disciplinary artist who works with photography, drawing, painting, sculpture, and more. Her public art has been featured at the Meow Wolf Convergence Station in Denver, Children’s Museum of Denver, the Town of Silverthorne, amongst others. She created this artwork, measuring over four feet high and ten feet wide, that combines photography, drawing, and painting, making it a work of collage and mixed media printed on an aluminum panel. Collage is a technique where different images are assembled to create a new image, and mixed media is when an artwork is made with more than one medium or material. Together, they create a complex landscape of a mountain valley in Colorado during winter. Note how the foreground, or the layer closest to the viewer, has topographical lines that transition into a black that contains the roots of trees. Meanwhile, the background has a forest containing realistic trees. The sky has grey clouds, and the forest goes from a negative color scale to normal coloring. Can you tell which parts are photography, painting, and drawing? Neill said she wanted to: “hint at an experience of the landscape that is not seen but only felt.”
