Le Petit Bouquet (2019)

Mary Yznaga, born in 1955 in San Marcos, TX, is a sculptor who works with steel, aluminum, and copper. Here is one of her artworks made from 22-gauge steel and measures one foot high, nine inches wide, and 10 inches deep. It is in the form of a bouquet of seven open roses. Note how the stems are “tied” together by a coil even though they are welded together. As well, each petal seems to be an independent panel of steel that are welded at the bottom. The polish of the steel reflects light at the top while keeping the center of the flower dark through the shadows cast from each petal’s interior. Making a flower that would normally wilt and die with steel is purposeful by Yznaga. She said: “Each piece I create is a dialogue between material and language. I am inexplicably drawn to the dichotomy between the hard surfaces of my materials and the softness of flower petals, a motif seen throughout my work.” A motif is a recurring element or subject within or amongst an artist’s work(s).

Aquí se presenta una de sus obras, realizada en acero de calibre 22, que mide un pie de alto, nueve pulgadas de ancho, y 10 pulgadas de profundidad. Adopta la forma de un ramo de siete rosas abiertas. Observe cómo los tallos aparecen “atados” entre sí mediante una espiral, a pesar de estar soldados. Asimismo, cada pétalo parece ser un panel de acero independiente soldado en su base. El pulido del acero refleja la luz en la parte superior, al tiempo que mantiene oscuro el centro de la flor gracias a las sombras proyectadas desde el interior de cada pétalo. La elección de crear con acero una flor que, por naturaleza, se marchitaría y moriría, es una decisión deliberada por parte de Yznaga. Ella dijo: “Cada obra que creo constituye un diálogo entre el material y el lenguaje. Me siento inexplicablemente atraída por la dicotomía entre las superficies duras de mis materiales y la suavidad de los pétalos de las flores, un motivo recurrente en toda mi obra.” Un motivo es un elemento o tema que se repite dentro de la obra, o el conjunto de obras, de un artista.
