Lightly Metered (Wind Swept Meters) (2013)

Multimedia artist and designer Anthony Thompson Shumate earned an MFA in Sculpture from the University of Houston and received six ADDY Awards from the American Advertising Federation and two Bronze Quill awards in excellence in design. He created this unique parking meter, one of six commissioned by the City of Houston Parking Management Department, in the Warehouse District near Hardy and Nance Street by downtown Houston that measures over two-and-a-half feet high and wide. This could be considered an example of applied art, which are artworks that are created as practical objects while having aesthetic qualities. The top of the parking meter is attached to three galvanized steel chains, which are coated with zinc to prevent rusting, that seem to be bending to one side. The meter is fully sixed to the ground with anchors and doesn’t move, though it seems it is being carried away by the wind. This could also be described as kinetic art, which is when an artwork in any medium shows movement that can be perceived by the viewer.
