Looking for Something Better

Camila Labarca Linaweaver, born in Chile in 1987, immigrated to the US at the age of seven and is known for her printmaking practice. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and art spaces throughout the US, such as in: Fort Worth, TX; Chicago, IL; Tallahassee, FL; Baltimore, MD; Albuquerque, NM; and more. Here is one of her monotypes on paper made with oil-based etching inks and graphite that measures over three feet high and over two feet wide. It shows an abstract landscape of a tree sitting on a horizon. The image is in two halves, the bottom half being black and the top half a yellowish color. A thick, white line marks the horizon. A monotype is when an image is drawn onto a smooth, non-absorbent surface and then pressed onto another surface, creating a one-of-a-kind print. Note how Linaweaver applies different pressures and layers for artistic effect, such as the smeared patches of white in the black half and the vertical streaks of white over the red tree, creating a mirage-like image. Linaweaver said: “Using my experience as an immigrant, I create poetic works that question the delineation of land and the physical and psychological effects that manifest when crossing borders.”

Camila Labarca Linaweaver, nacida en Chile en 1987, emigró a los Estados Unidos a la edad de siete años y es conocida por su práctica en el grabado. Sus obras han sido exhibidas en galerías y espacios artísticos a lo largo de los Estados Unidos, tales como: Fort Worth, TX; Chicago, IL; Tallahassee, FL; Baltimore, MD; Albuquerque, NM; entre otros. Aquí se presenta uno de sus monotipos sobre papel, realizado con tintas de grabado al óleo y grafito, que mide más de tres pies de alto y más de dos pies de ancho. La obra muestra un paisaje abstracto de un árbol situado sobre un horizonte. La imagen se divide en dos mitades, la inferior es de color negro y la superior de un tono amarillento. Una línea blanca y gruesa marca el horizonte. Un monotipo consiste en dibujar una imagen sobre una superficie lisa y no absorbente para luego presionarla contra otra superficie, creando así una impresión única e irrepetible. Nota cómo Linaweaver aplica diferentes presiones y capas con fines artísticos, tales como las manchas blancas difuminadas en la mitad negra y las vetas blancas verticales sobre el árbol rojo, creando una imagen que evoca un espejismo. Linaweaver dijo: “Basándome en mi experiencia como inmigrante, creo obras poéticas que cuestionan la delimitación de la tierra y los efectos físicos y psicológicos que se manifiestan al cruzar fronteras.”
