Letitia Huckaby, born in Germany in 1972, earned her master’s degree from the University of North Texas. Her artwork is in the collections of the Library of Congress, McNay Art Museum, Art Museum of Southeast Texas, and more. Huckaby is the co-founder of Kinfolk House and recognized as the 2022 Texas Artist of the Year by Art League Houston. Huckaby is known for combining photography and textiles to show family narratives and African American history. Here is a print on watercolor paper that measures two-and-a-half feet high and over one-foot-and-a-half wide. The image shows a side profile and silhouette of a woman’s head, neck, and shoulders. The woman’s outline is obscured, hinting that Huckaby took a picture from behind a translucent fabric with a light source behind the figure. As well, the surface of the image seems to be quilted together with rectangular patches sewn with threads that run loose in some parts. This printed image is a photo of the original piece where Huckaby printed a photograph on a sack of flour. Overall, the artwork imbues history and humanity into material and artifact.
