Jonathan Leach, born in Kentucky in 1977, is a painter whose works are in the collections of NRG Texas, Hess Co., the Bank of Montreal, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, and the City of Houston’s Civic Art Collection. Many of his paintings are characterized by using long lines, rectangles, and bright colors that together make cityscapes, which is when an artwork represents an urban environment like buildings, streets, and infrastructure. Here is an acrylic and spray paint piece on a five-foot square canvas. The background, or the layer furthest away from the viewer, is a red sky that gradients into white from left to right. The foreground, or the layer closest to the viewer, is busy with yellow, blue, green, and brown lines that parallel and intersect each other. As well, solid and fragmented rectangles make occupy much of the canvas towards the middle. Altogether, this makes a cityscape full of powerlines, billboards, street signs, and light poles. The perspective seems to be someone walking down the street and looking up as the street signs and billboards appear equal in size.
