Marble Sculpture of Madonna del Cardellino

This marble sculpture features a sitting woman holding a book and looking down upon two children petting a bird. Placed on a children’s bookshelf at the Carnegie Branch Library, the two-foot-high artwork features detail in the hair, clothing, and the woman’s hands, for example. Interestingly, this piece is a sculptural version of a painting titled ‘Madonna del cardellino’ circa 1505-1506 by Italian Renaissance artist Raphael. The woman is Mary, the mother of Jesus, while the boy on the left is John the Baptist and on the right is Jesus Christ. In the painting, Mary wears a red blouse with a blue robe; in this sculpture, they are the white of the marble. While the painting places the three figures in a green landscape, this sculpture’s background is wherever it is placed. In this case, the background is a library, fitting the book in Mary’s hand and perhaps reflecting parents reading while caring for their children. Finally, the bird the boys are petting is a goldfinch, a symbol of Christ’s crucifixion. According to legend, the bird tried to remove a thorn from Jesus’ crown, causing a drop of blood to permanently stain its head, a red patch seen on European goldfinches.

Esta escultura de mármol presenta a una mujer sentada sosteniendo un libro y mirando hacia abajo a dos niños acariciando un pájaro. Ubicada en una estantería para libros de niños en la Biblioteca Sucursal Carnegie, la obra de arte de dos pies de alto presenta detalles en el cabello, la ropa, y las manos de la mujer, por ejemplo. Curiosamente, esta pieza es una versión escultórica de una pintura titulada ‘Madonna del cardellino’, circa 1505-1506, del artista renacentista italiano Rafael. La mujer es María, la madre de Jesús, mientras que el niño de la izquierda es Juan el Bautista y a la derecha es Jesucristo. En la pintura, María tiene una blusa roja con una túnica azul; en esta escultura, son el blanco del mármol. Mientras que la pintura sitúa las tres figuras en un paisaje verde, el fondo de esta escultura está dondequiera que se coloque. En este caso, el fondo es una biblioteca, que conecta con el tema del libro en la mano de María y tal vez refleja a unos padres leyendo mientras cuidan a sus hijos. Finalmente, el pájaro que los niños acarician es un jilguero, símbolo de la crucifixión de Cristo. Según la leyenda, el pájaro intentó quitar una espina de la corona de Jesús, lo que provocó que una gota de sangre manchara permanentemente su cabeza, una mancha roja que se ve en los jilgueros europeos.
