Originally from Louisiana, jewelry artist Debbie Wetmore has lived in Houston most of her life. Prior to beginning her jewelry career, she studied architecture and commercial art. An avid collector of beadwork, jewelry, and artifacts, Wetmore creates complex artworks that combines these materials into a single piece. Here, Wetmore seems to have combined a pair of outside calipers with various objects. Usually, outside calipers are used to measure the size of an object from the outside by adjusting a screw that tightens the curved legs around it, maintaining the distance between the legs and able to be measured. The handling grip of the caliper is decorated with items made of 22k gold, sterling silver, and stones. Items include a silver marmoset, a silver butterfly, a golden bee, and more. What would this be used for? Normally as a caliper but with flourishment? As a decoration where the caliper can be fastened around an item? By placing valuable and decorative objects on a tool, Wetmore contrasts the valuable with the useful, creating a tension for the viewer to find value and purpose.
