About the Artwork:
Moonwalker (2001)
by Silvestri

In 2001, Houston hosted the CowParade, a public art exhibition series where life-sized, fiberglass cow sculptures, painted by artists, were placed at various locations throughout the city for two months; after two months, the cows were sold at an auction to raise money for the Texas Children's Hospital and the Texas Children's Cancer Center. This artwork, “Moonwalker,” was made by the gift and novelty company Silvestri for the event. It measures over eight feet tall and shows a cow in a cow-pattern space suit on the moon while holding a Texas flag in their left hand and a camera in their right hand. The cow poses with their foot stepped up on a moon rock while the base states, “HOUSTON WE HAVE LANDED.” Funnily, the Texas flag is waving, but the moon has no wind so it would be still. The sculpture was purchased and donated to the City of Houston by businessman Marc Ostrofsky on behalf of his daughters Kelly, Shelly, and Tracy Ostrofsky. It stands in the Bush Intercontinental Airport, either welcoming visitors or wishing outgoing Houstonians safe travels. Houston is known as Space City while beef is an important industry for Texas, making the cow a fun homage to Texan identity.

Moonwalker (2001)
