Artist LeRoy Neiman, born in 1921 in Minnesota and died in 2012, was known for his paintings of athletes and sporting events, such as being the official painter of five Olympic games, several boxing fight posters and program covers, and more. His work is part of the permanent collections of the Smithsonian, the Whitney Museum, and this collection. This is a portrait of Morris Frank, who was born in New Jersey in 1902 and raised in Lufkin, TX before moving to Houston in 1937 to be a reporter for the Houston Post. He then became their sports editor until 1949 and started a column “Of Cabbages and Kings” in 1950 for the Houston Chronicle. Frank received many awards, such as the 1960 Houston Sportsman of the Year, hosted two television programs, and died in 1975. In 1977, City Council approved a library to be named in Frank’s honor that was opened in 1983 on 6440 W. Bellfort Ave; it moved to 10103 Fondren Road and was formally closed in 2023. The portrait is in Neiman’s signature expressionist style, art that is based on emotions and subjective perspectives rather than reality, where bright, brilliant colors are painted in spatters and heavy, thick brush strokes.
