Mother with Sons

Mississippi-born Earlie Hudnall, Jr. has been practicing photography for more than 40 years, capturing the spectrum of Houston’s African American experiences, from youth to newlyweds to elders. Here, Hudnall, Jr. portraits a mother and her children. Portraits are a genre of art that represent a specific person, often for their accomplishments, status, or role. Note how the mother and children wear formal clothes and shiny shoes. Notice how the child on the left has his eyes closed while the others stare at the camera. They smile and stand close to each other, clearly a moment of candid joy. They pose in a barren lot, the background featuring a mound of dirt and detritus while another child focuses elsewhere. Is this family leaving or going to an important event? Note the row of houses behind them. Is this a gathering at someone’s house in the neighborhood? A nearby church service? A celebration at a local restaurant? Either way, they are together.
