Marcelyn McNeil, born in Kansas in 1965, earned an MFA from the University of Illinois, Chicago and is known for her large, abstract oil paintings. Her work has been exhibited at: Lawndale Art Center; Galveston Art Center’ Kathryn Markel in New York City; Robischon in Denver, Colorado; Central Features in Albuquerque, New Mexico; and more. Here is one of her abstract oil paintings on canvas that measures over four feet high and over six-and-a-half feet wide. This painting features a mountain-like formation with black, grey, and blue arcs, an oblong, yellow blob, and a thumb-like protrusion all over it. The background is a subtle gradient of grey. Abstract art generally refers to when an artist moves away from reality to play with shapes and forms to invite viewers to come with their own interpretations of the artwork. What do you think it is? To paint this, McNeil said she strategically taped, poured, sanded, trowelled, and dripped oil paint onto the canvas.
