In 2022, Houston City Council accepted 52 mayoral portraits into the Civic Art Collection after Hurricane Harvey damaged them, many of which were created before the establishment of the Civic Art Program in 1999. By formally accepting them into the Collection, the portraits can be maintained and conserved. Most of the portraits are reproductions of original paintings or photographs. Here is a portrait of Nathan Fuller, the 12th Mayor of Houston. Fuller, born in Beaufort, NC in 1803, moved to Houston in 1833. Fuller was a colonel and served during the Mexican-American War prior to his first election as Mayor in 1853. He supported Houston’s transportation infrastructure by promoting the Houston and Texas Central Railway and successfully lobbying the state legislature to fund the removal of obstructions in the route between Buffalo Bayou and Galveston Bay. He was reelected in 1854. Fuller then helped pass a city ordinance to prohibit the use of pistols and rifles within city limits. He died in 1889.
