Sharon Kopriva, born in Houston in 1948, is a painter whose works can be found in the permanent collections of the Menil Collection; The Museum of Fine Arts Houston; The Art Museum of South Texas; Ogden Museum of Southern Art; Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas; and more. She was named the Texas State Three-Dimensional Artist by the Texas Commission on the Arts in 2005 and the Texas Artist of the Year by Art League of Houston in 2001. Kopriva has a series of paintings titled “The Verde” which are inspired by the mountain forests of northern Idaho, where she also lives. Here is a landscape of a forest of what could be paper birch or quaking aspen trees, evidenced by their light-colored bark and gatherings of leaves, that are common in northern Idaho. Kopriva painted this piece with oil on a board that measures four feet high and three feet wide. Note the perspective of the painting, or point of view, as looking up to the canopy of the forest, making the trees seem towering and continuous. As well, consider the moss growing on the bark. This can be considered an example of hyperrealism, a genre of art that replicates real life details with precision.
