Painter and illustrator David Hickman, born in Alexandria, Virginia, taught at the University of Houston for over 40 years and helped establish its MFA program. The title, #17, means that this work is one of many in a series of paintings with similarly numbered names; have you seen the others? In art, a series is a collection of works that share a theme, style, or technique to create unified works. Like the others, this piece features shapes scattered throughout the canvas. However, this piece is painted on a wood panel cut in a unique way. Compared to the other works in the series, this one begs the question: did Hickman cut the wood to fit the painting? Or did he paint the odd shapes to fit the panel? Note the circles in this work, a motif, or recurring element or subject, that are present throughout many of Hickman’s works in the Civic Art Collection. This time, the circles are larger and are in rows to form their own lines rather primarily being alone. As well, note the texture of this piece due to acrylic being painted on wood, causing raised lines and more visible strokes.
