Born in Alexandria, Virginia, painter and illustrator David Hickman taught at the University of Houston for over 40 years and helped establish the MFA program. He painted this piece using acrylic on canvas. The title, #46, can mean this work is one of many in a series of paintings with similarly numbered names; have you seen the others? This piece features various odd shapes sharing the same space, seemingly clashing with each other. Look closer. Do the images overlap? Do they go into each other? Is each shape independent? Or do they form a larger shape? If you’ve seen Hickman’s other works in the Civic Art Collection, you’ll notice similarities and differences between them. For example, a motif, or recurring element or subject within or amongst an artist’s work(s), in some of Hickman’s paintings are the circles scattered throughout. Why do you think that is? To bring order to what seems chaotic? To punctuate some of the shapes? Why?
