#75 MANIGUA

Painter and illustrator David Hickman, born in Alexandria, Virginia, taught at the University of Houston for over 40 years and helped establish the MFA program. He painted this piece using acrylic on canvas. The title, #75 Manigua, can mean this work is one of many in a series of paintings with similarly numbered names. In art, a series is a collection of works that share a theme, style, or technique to create unified works. Like some of the others, this piece plays with shapes in different colors scattered throughout the canvas. Notice the motif between Hickman’s paintings, or recurring element within or amongst an artist’s work(s), of circles throughout. Are the circles the heads or lights on the shapes? What makes this artwork unique are the tubular shapes that seem to be moving amongst each other on a dark grey background, contrasting with the tube’s lighter shades of purple, green, brown, and red with circle endpoints of pastel pink, orange, purple, melon, red, blue, navy, and black. Part of the title, “Manigua,” is a Taíno word used throughout Latin America to refer to tropical swamps, forests, or grasslands.

Pintó esta obra utilizando acrílico sobre lienzo. El título, #75 Manigua, sugiere que esta obra forma parte de una serie de pinturas con nombres numerados de forma similar. En el arte, una serie es una colección de obras que comparten un tema, un estilo, o una técnica para crear un conjunto coherente. Al igual que otras obras de la serie, esta pieza juega con formas de diferentes colores dispersas por todo el lienzo. Observa el motivo recurrente en las pinturas de Hickman, o el elemento que se repite en su obra, de círculos. ¿Representan los círculos cabezas o luces en las figuras? Lo que hace que esta obra de arte sea única son las formas tubulares que parecen moverse entre sí sobre un fondo gris oscuro, contrastando con los tonos más claros de púrpura, verde, marrón, y rojo de los tubos, con extremos circulares de color rosa pastel, naranja, morado, melón, rojo, azul, azul marino, y negro. Parte del título, "Manigua," es una palabra taína que se utiliza en toda América Latina para referirse a pantanos, bosques, o praderas tropicales.
