Born in Alexandria, Virginia, painter and illustrator David Hickman taught at the University of Houston for over 40 years and helped establish the MFA program. He painted this over five-foot-tall and over seven-foot-wide piece using acrylic on canvas. The title, #84, means this work is one in a series of abstract paintings with similarly numbered names. If you’ve seen Hickman’s other works in the Civic Art Collection, you’ll notice this piece is like his others through a playfulness with colors but different in its lack of large, various shapes. Instead, Hickman uses many small, oblong shapes of various colors, such as shades of green, blue, yellow, brown, red, and more, but with consistent lengths, on an entirely grey background. The oblong shapes are clumped together in the top right but seems to be coming apart, some of the shapes falling downwards. Abstract art allows for artworks and viewers to have a conversation on meaning. Sometimes, an artwork is simply meant to be experienced. What experience do you take from this work?

El pintor e ilustrador David Hickman, nacido en Alexandria, Virginia, fue un profesor en la Universidad de Houston durante más de 40 años y ayudó a establecer el programa de MFA. Pintó esta obra, de más de cinco pies de alto y más de siete pies de ancho, utilizando acrílico sobre lienzo. El título, #84, indica que esta obra forma parte de una serie de pinturas abstractas con nombres numerados de forma similar. Si ya ha visto otras obras de Hickman en la Colección de Arte Cívico, notará que esta pieza se asemeja a las demás por su uso lúdico del color, pero se diferencia por la ausencia de formas grandes y variadas. En cambio, Hickman utiliza numerosas formas pequeñas y alargadas de diversos colores, como tonos de verde, azul, amarillo, marrón, rojo, y otros, pero de longitud uniforme, sobre un fondo completamente gris. Las formas alargadas están agrupadas en la parte superior derecha, pero parecen estar separándose, y algunas de ellas caen hacia abajo. El arte abstracto permite que las obras y los espectadores entablen un diálogo sobre su significado.
