Prince Varughese Thomas, born in 1969 in Kuwait with Indian heritage, moved to Houston in 1992 to attend the University of Houston and earn an MFA in 1996. Since then, he has become a professor of art at Lamar University, and his work has been included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Art Museum of Southeast Texas, and here. This is a photograph that measures over three feet high and over four feet wide. It is part of a series, a collection of works that share a theme, technique, or style, by Thomas titled “Liquid Sky” that focuses on reflections in water. This image seems to show a lake’s surface as the shore reflects itself, causing land and trees to go upward and downward. Note how the top of the photograph has a grainy texture, making the image seem more like a painting. Though Thomas used a traditional shooting method, he notes that: “The formal content of the images in this series are exactly the same as when I shot them through the camera lens. The final images consist of digitally combining the straight photographs with emulsion transfers of the same image.”
