Painting No. 32-107

Painter and illustrator David Hickman, born in Alexandria, Virginia, taught at the University of Houston for over 40 years and helped establish the MFA program. He painted this piece using acrylic on canvas. The title, #32-107, can mean this work is one of many in a series of paintings with similarly numbered names; have you seen the others? In art, a series is a collection of works that share a theme, style, or technique to create unified works. Like the others, this piece features shapes scattered throughout the canvas. However, this artwork minimizes them, as though Hickman painted them from far away. Curved lines seem to be scratched into the canvas painted a deep brown; notice a motif between Hickman’s paintings, or recurring element within or amongst an artist’s work(s), of the circles throughout.
