The term mixed media applies to artworks made with more than one medium or material. Here is a mixed media piece, measuring 19 inches high, 15 inches wide, and rising four inches from its surface, made of metals, gemstones, and paint in the shape of rectangular frame with a semi-circular arch. The top right has white rectangles while the left side are pages of a book or newspaper and a drawing of a hand with a paintbrush, all painted over with yellow. The bottom is painted teal and white. Throughout this layer are holes poked into the material. The center of the frame is a thin vase full of flowers made of metal and white gemstones of various cuts, such as circles, ovals, squares, and more. The work explores the contrast between the rigidity of metals and gemstones with the delicateness of flowers and nature. The artist, Karin Broker, said that "the final objects ... revel in optimism and fairness with a heavy dose of beauty." Broker, born in Pennsylvania in 1950, was a professor of printmaking and drawing at Rice University from 1980–2021, named the Texas Artist of the Year in 1994, and received two grants from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Aquí se presenta una pieza de técnica mixta, de 48 cm de alto, 38 cm de ancho, y 10 cm de altura, hecha de metales, piedras preciosas, y pintura en forma de marco rectangular con un arco de medio punto. La parte superior derecha presenta rectángulos blancos, mientras que el lado izquierdo presenta páginas de un libro o periódico y el dibujo de una mano con un pincel, todo pintado con amarillo. La parte inferior está pintada de verde azulado y blanco. A lo largo de esta capa se observan agujeros en el material. El centro del marco es un fino jarrón lleno de flores de metal y gemas blancas de diversos cortes, como círculos, óvalos, cuadrados, y más. La obra explora el contraste entre la rigidez de los metales y las gemas con la delicadeza de las flores y la naturaleza. La artista, Karin Broker, afirmó que “los objetos finales... rebosan optimismo y justicia con una gran dosis de belleza.” Broker, nacida en Pensilvania en 1950, fue profesora de grabado y dibujo en la Universidad Rice entre 1980 y 2021, nombrada Artista del Año de Texas en 1994, y recibió dos becas del Fondo Nacional para las Artes.
