Visual artist Leamon Green, born in 1959 in Alabama, is a professor of fine arts at Texas Southern University and has had his work shown in Galveston, Dallas, Seattle, New Orleans, Colombia, Tanzania, and more. Green received a Fulbright Research Award and was an artist in residence at the Vermont Studio Center. Though known for his paintings and drawings, this is a site-specific installation of large panes of clear, tempered glass as a wall for a hallway across from a series of wall-mounted, fiber optic boxes painted with acrylic. Located within Bush Intercontinental Airport are over 30 glass panes that each measuring over 10 feet high and five feet long. They are etched with images of people walking in front of a continuous wave that fluctuates; as the piece continues, there are different designs within the panes. For example, a woman carries her luggage behind her in front of a scaly wave while a person pushes another person in a wheelchair on top of a ridged path inset with diamonds. The fiber optic boxes are painted with the same designs but either overlapping each other or in different colors. Green was inspired by the hallway’s openness and natural light as a “transitional space between two destinations [with] travelers passing through culturally different areas of the world.”
