Liz Conces Spencer, born in Houston in 1953, is a visual artist and educator who has helped complete commissions for the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Camp Aranzazu in Rockport, Texas, the City of Houston, Talento Bilingue of Houston, and more. She has taught workshops and classes for the Young Audiences of Houston, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, Project Row Houses, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, University of St. Thomas, and more. Here is one of her acrylic paintings on canvas that measures over three feet high and five feet wide. The image shows a forest of trees but painted in what could be an expressionist style, which when an artwork prioritizes emotional perspective rather than being realistic. For example, the tree trunks are blue while the forest floor has patterns of various colors, such as yellow, orange, purple, green, and more. As well, the tree foliage is made of hundreds of small circles of various colors, too, such as white, orange, red, blue, green, black, and more. Spencer said: “Our visual environment is abstract by its very nature; at any given time and place, we can experience it as either simplified or fragmented…”
