Pick a Petal (2010)

Originally from Louisiana, jewelry artist Debbie Wetmore has lived in Houston most of her life. Prior to beginning her jewelry career, she studied architecture and commercial art. An avid collector of beadwork, jewelry, and artifacts, Wetmore creates complex artworks that combines these materials into a single piece. Here, Wetmore seems to have taken a jewelry box for a ring and line the inside with an artificial turf-like material to make the inside seem like grass. Inside is a ring made of sterling silver in the shape of a flower where each of the petals contains pieces from found objects, or items in an artwork that are not normally considered materials for art since they have non-art functions, of different sources. For example, one petal has a panel cut from an Arizona Green Tea can, while another has a panel cut from a Monster energy drink can and another with a panel cut from a tin of Altoids mints. The center is a Shiner Bock beer bottle cap. What others can you see? By placing everyday objects in a ring, Wetmore contrasts the valuable with the common, creating a tension for the viewer to find value and meaning.

En su interior hay un anillo de plata esterlina con forma de flor, cuyos pétalos contienen fragmentos de objetos encontrados, o elementos de una obra de arte que normalmente no se consideran materiales para el arte ya que tienen funciones no artísticas, de diferentes orígenes. Por ejemplo, un pétalo tiene un panel cortado de una lata de té verde Arizona, mientras que otro tiene un panel cortado de una lata de bebida energética Monster y otro tiene un panel cortado de una lata de mentas Altoids. El centro es una chapa de cerveza Shiner Bock. ¿Qué más puedes ver? Al colocar objetos cotidianos en un anillo, Wetmore contrasta lo valioso con lo común, creando una tensión para que el espectador encuentre valor y significado.
