Colby Deal, born in Houston in 1988, is a photographer who has completed artist residencies at Project Row Houses and Red Line Contemporary Art Center. His artworks have been featured with the Houston Museum of African American Culture, 2021 Whitney Biennial in New York City, Vogue, Hyperallergic, and more. Here are four large-scale printings of his photographs located within Terminal A at Bush Intercontinental Airport. The images are set within frames that hang on opposite sides of two pillars. The frames, measuring nine feet high and four-and-a-half feet wide, are made of 100-200-year-old, hand-carved Teak wood doorways from Northern Africa and the Middle East; within the frames are backing made of fabric with a vine and flower pattern. The photographs are printed in black and white on metal. Each image features different people: including a well-dressed couple named David and Chloe; a younger woman gardening named Karrie; an elder woman sitting in a garden named Sheba; and a Trans woman named Sol standing along a curb in front of a house. Deal said: “Under sourced communities and people of color are under explicit cultural erasure, through photography and a family of mediums I preserve these cultural characteristics that are being erased.”
