Within the George R. Brown Convention Center is a six-foot-high and nine-foot-wide quilt commissioned by Quilts, Inc. for their 1999 exhibition titled "The Quilt Show of the Century." The deep blue, gold, red, and yellow cotton fiber, fabric, thread, and needlework quilt shows a nighttime view of the City of Houston Skyline underneath fireworks. Details include projections of an astronaut, Mt. Rushmore, and flags on Houston skyscrapers, as well as fireworks exploding in various colors. The quilt is based on a photograph taken of the “Power of Houston Laser, Light and Fireworks Spectacular” in 1999, which was regarded as the largest of its kind in North America where 10-tons of pyrotechnics, 400 optical watts of laser, and 2 million watts of light were apparent across 144 city blocks. Artists Cynthia England, Libby Lehman, and Vicki Mangum collaborated on the quilt design: England created the buildings; Lehman created the fireworks using a variety of metallic threads; and Mangum added intricate metallic quilting. Though the quilt was made in 1999, Quilts, Inc. donated the artwork to the city of Houston in 2004, the 30th anniversary of the founding of the International Quilt Festival.
