Mathieu JN Baptiste, born in Haiti in 1993, is a visual artist whose practice includes painting, drawing, and public art. Baptiste’s artworks have been exhibited at the Houston Museum of African American Culture, Lawndale Art Center, Rice University, Museum of Science and Industry, and more. Within Bush Intercontinental Airport is one of his acrylic and oil paintings on canvas that measures five feet high and four feet wide. It shows a portrait of a smiling woman wearing a turtleneck sweater on a solid yellow background. Note how Baptiste painted the woman’s face in a hyper-realistic style with details of lighting, pores, and dimples within her skin and strands of hair; hyperrealism is a genre of art that replicates real life details with precision. However, her turtleneck is painted in a more expressionistic style with simple lines of color on solid black. As well, note how the woman’s hair goes from hyperreal to abstract, transforming into what could be flowers or brushstrokes of swirling colors. Baptiste said: “‘Proud’ gives insight to the freedom that comes from westernized countries outside the Caribbean. The freedom to be your true self without your Haitian or Jamaican or Trinidadian parents or family shaming or shunning your authenticity.”
