Ann Marie Nafziger, born in Ohio in 1972, earned her MFA in painting at the University of Houston and moved to Marfa, TX in 2003. Her artwork has been exhibited at the Marfa Contemporary, Lawndale Art Center, Portland Art Center, and more. Here is one of her acrylic paintings on canvas that measures over five-and-a-half feet high and five feet wide. It is an abstract image painted with shades of purple, yellow, black, and grey on a light blue background. Note how the colors are lighter on the left and darker on the right, perhaps mimicking sunlight. Abstract art is when an artist moves away from reality to play with shapes and forms to invite viewers to come with their own interpretations. What do you see? The title provides some context. “Purple Mountain Majesty” is a reference to the lyrics from the 1893 song “America the Beautiful” by Katharine Lee Bates. While the song is based on the Rocky Mountains, this painting is a reference to El Capitan, a peak that is part of the Guadalupe Mountains located in the Big Bend part of west Texas. It is the seventh highest peak in Texas at 8,085 feet high.
