In 2022, Houston City Council accepted 52 mayoral portraits into the Civic Art Collection after Hurricane Harvey damaged them, many of which were created before the establishment of the Civic Art Program in 1999. By formally accepting them into the Collection, the portraits can be maintained and conserved. Though most of the portraits are reproductions of original paintings or photographs, this is one of two original paintings in this series. Here is a portrait of Richard Henry Fonville, the 46th Mayor of Houston. Fonville, born in 1882 in Texas, moved to Houston, became a pharmacist, and owned pharmacies. Fonville ran against incumbent Mayor Oscar Holcombe and won, serving as Mayor from 1937-1939 on a platform to address corruption and briberies. During his tenure, Fonville built a fire station, renamed Houston Municipal Airport to Howard Hughes Airport, and purchased land that would become Lake Houston. Fonville Middle School is named after him. He died in 1954.
