Mississippi-born Houstonian Earlie Hudnall, Jr. often took photos of everyday life in African American communities throughout the American South. In this photograph, Hudnall, Jr. depicts three children standing on the roots and holding onto the trunk of what appears to be a cedar elm, a type of tree that grows throughout the American South, including Texas and Mississippi. Perspective, in photography, refers to the visual relationship between the camera and the subjects in an image. Perspective can be explored through the angles, distance, and the photographer’s point of view. For example, why did Hudnall, Jr. choose to point his camera upward at the children and the tree rather than on their level? Why did he choose to focus on them and not what they’re looking at? What are the children looking at? Consider the complexity of the tree’s roots and branches compared to the stature and curiosity of the children.
