Run Red Flow Smooth (1971)

Mixed media describes artworks where more than one material or medium is used. For example, L. Gates used metal, wood, and paint to complete this piece in 1971 rather than solely using one of the materials. Four large and eight small metal panels cut into unique shapes have been attached to a single, rectangular panel of lumber using rivets. Slightly above the middle of the panel is a line and tri-oval, when triangles are rounded into smooth curves, of bright red that separates two of four large metal panels and contains the smaller metal panels. Note how each of the metals are polished differently, creating various shades and lusters. What do you see? Is it a landscape of hills with a river running through it? Are the small metal panels the eye of a person? Are they a village and road on a map? How does each thing you notice about this work change your experience of the work? Though the piece appears simple, its abstract style allows viewers to draw their own meanings and interpretations.
