Geoff Winningham, born in Jackson, Tennessee in 1943, is a photographer, journalist, and filmmaker who has received two Guggenheim Fellowships, five grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, and more. He moved to Houston in 1961 to study at Rice University before joining its art department in 1969 to teach, currently holding the Lynette S. Autrey Chair in the Humanities. Here is a landscape photograph, which is when an image focuses on nature such as landforms, vegetation, or bodies of water, in the form of an archival inkjet print on 100% cotton rag media paper that measures over two feet high and four-and-a-half feet wide. This shows Sabine Pass, an outlet for Sabine Lake into the Atlantic Ocean that also serves as a natural border between Texas’ and Louisiana’s state lines. Note how the sky mirrors the body of water as the green land disappears into the horizon. The perspective is from a bird’s eye view, or as though the viewer were a flying bird looking down. This is part of a series, a collection of works that share a theme, style, or technique, of eight images by Winningham that represent the vastness and diversity of the Texas Gulf Coast.
