Debbie Stevens, born in Oklahoma in 1955, is a painter who is a member of the Oil Painters of America, Society of Animal Artists, International Guild of Realism, and Contemporary Texas Regionalists. Here is one of her oil paintings on canvas that measures over five feet high and 10 feet wide. It shows the surface of a pond or lake with a single, red leaf. Seemingly simple, the painting explores both realism and geometric abstractions to create a calm scene from nature. Note how the reflections of light on the water’s surface use shades of blue, yellow, and white through oblong and circular shapes; the lone leaf is painted in a more realistic style, perhaps falling from an oak tree due to a seasonal change, as it interrupts the reflections of light with mass on the water’s surface. Perhaps the shapes are capturing the last moments of motion that the leaf caused? Stevens said: “I wish to bring the viewer into my world of water and birds so that they too might experience the beauty, joy, wonderment, tranquility, and peace of the natural world involving landscape and wildlife”
