David Aylsworth, born in 1966 in Ohio, moved to Houston to be an artist resident at the Core Program at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston from 1989-1991. Aylsworth is known for his abstract paintings that use bright colors, improvised shapes, and visible brush strokes and layers. Here is an oil painting on canvas that measures over four feet wide and high. Starting from the bottom, there is a white wave overlaid with a yellow wave. They cover the bottom of a dark grey, smooth triangle with a red lip and two more triangles, one white-ish with a red undertone and the other blue. Is this a ship at sea with waves underneath and two sails? What do you think? Artists often use abstract art to play with shapes and invite viewers to come with their own interpretations. Aylsworth said: “My paintings in the last several years, while remaining basically abstract in nature, have taken on references to imagined landscapes, seascapes, and the skies… I am pleased when viewers identify with and anthropomorphize the shapes and see their interconnectedness with others on the picture plane.”
