About the Artwork:
Stealing (c. 19th century)
by Louis John Rhead

Throughout history, books have been accompanied by illustrations to provide a more visually appealing experience and help readers imagine the text. This illustration by British-born artist Louis John Rhead is for a book of fiction published in 1680 titled “The Life and Death of Mr. Badman” by British preacher John Bunyan. The book is a conversation between two men about the life of a sinner to teach Christians how to avoid evil behavior. Rhead provided illustrations for a reprint of the book in the 19th century, over 200 years later. He immigrated to the US in 1883 to be a poster artist; by the late 1890s, Rhead illustrated numerous books, including “Robin Hood,” “Robinson Crusoe,” “Treasure Island,” and more. This piece was originally drawn with India ink, a simple black colored ink known for its richness, able to be used with a brush or pen. Note the detail of Rhead’s illustration as he uses various drawing techniques, such as cross hatching, which is when parallel lines are drawn close together to create depth followed by intersecting another layer of parallel lines to create tones and shadows. For example, look at the table’s shadow compared to the man’s shadow.

Robando (c. siglo XIX)
