Still Morning

If landscapes are when images capture land, then seascapes are images that show the sea. Here, Charles Baugh shows a stilt house above a sea, which are houses held up on poles or pillars above ground or water; these houses are common along the Texas coast either to protect them from flooding or provide easy access to the sea. Stilt houses have been built in the Americas by indigenous peoples and are also common throughout coastal cities in other states and countries as well. The earthy browns of the houses contrast with the bright blues of the sea. Look at how Baugh layers brown to create slats of wood and the blues to add depth to the ocean. Notice how the blue will often show through the brown to show the stain of water on the wood. What does it mean to paint a seascape using watercolor, paints made up of pigments in a water-based solution?
