Sun and Moon in a Green Cloud (1977)

Leila McConnell, born in Los Angeles in 1927, moved to Houston at the age of six and later graduated from Rice University. After a trip to Italy in 1960, McConnell was inspired by the stucco painted walls there and moved away from realism to paint in soft, blended, and misty pastel colors. Here is one of her oil paintings on canvas that measures four feet high and three feet wide. It shows two orbs, one gold and the other white, sitting on the top and bottom of a green, wave-like shape in front of a blue background. This can be considered an abstract painting, which is when artists move away from reality to play with shapes and colors to allow viewers to draw their own interpretations. Note the haziness of the shapes, causing a dream-like feel. McConnell said: “I’ve called my paintings ‘sky paintings’ which were almost always symmetrical. The ‘bar of peace,’ a blue horizontal streak, began showing up around that time as well as other repeated imagery of suns, moons, and floating orbs. I call it the time between - there’s a long, long wait, and you know something is coming, but you don’t know what it is.”
