Heidi Gerstacker is a German-born and Houston-based artist known for her jewelry using various metals. This piece is a brooch. Historically, brooches were used to fasten clothes together, like scarves, hats, or robes, with examples found as early as the Bronze Age. As metalworking techniques advanced, brooches became symbols of status and wealth with unique designs and metals. This brooch is mostly made with sterling silver, which is an alloy of 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals; because silver is prone to tarnishing, or corrosion that darkens the surface, other metals can increase resistance, hardness, and strength. The hinge of the brooch is in the shape of a sunflower with a disc floret, or center, made of druse. In sunflowers, the disc floret typically holds thousands of seeds.
