That Sunnyside Pride (2022)

Irene Antonia Diane Reece, born in Houston in 1993, is a contemporary artist and visual activist whose practice includes photographic works, Black family archives, appropriated films, usage of text, and found objects. Inside the Sunnyside Health and Multi-Service Center is a multi-disciplinary installation in three parts by Reece. The largest of the three parts is a mural made of a vinyl wall wrap with approximately 70 white frames of various sizes filled with different images layered above. The vinyl wall wrap is a triptych of a tree, a home, and a blue sheet with white letters that spell out Langston Hughes’ poem “Dreams.” The frames contain inkjet prints of photographs of Sunnyside community members across generations, newspaper clippings, a grid of sports cards of athletes such as Mike Singletary, Larry Micheaux, and more. The next part is a grid of black-and-white photographs of more community members over a vinyl wall wrap of a quilt. The smallest part is a grid of 11 framed photographs in color that seem to be from an elder generation. This installation combines historical research, archival work, photography, and craft to tell the story of Sunnyside. Reece said: “The work was from the collaboration of the community members’ archives, personal objects, stories, and the artist’s portraits of the community. It is of utmost importance that this body of work showcases every aspect of Sunnyside’s authenticity. Sunnyside is Houston's culture.”

Los marcos albergan impresiones de inyección de tinta de fotografías de miembros de la comunidad de Sunnyside que abarcan varias generaciones, recortes de periódico y una cuadrícula de tarjetas deportivas de atletas como Mike Singletary, Larry Micheaux, y más. La siguiente sección consiste en una cuadrícula de fotografías en blanco y negro de más miembros de la comunidad, dispuesta sobre un revestimiento mural de vinilo que reproduce un edredón.
