The Great Blue (2019)

Anat Ronen, born in Israel in 1971, painted this 16-foot-high and eight-foot-wide artwork with acrylic and latex paint on wood panels. It shows a great blue heron perched on a wooden post in a Houston bayou as Houston skyscrapers stand in the background. The great blue heron is the largest heron native to North America with a head-to-tail length between three and five feet and a wingspan between five and six-and-a-half feet. They can be identified by the feathers on their wings and belly that gradient from grey to azure blue and ornamental, black plumes on their heads that go from above their eyes to the back of their head. Note how Ronen painted the border of the painting as wooden beams that the heron’s beak and tail overshadow, creating a three-dimensional effect. Ronen said: “A Great Blue Heron is a relatively common bird in our area, that we probably see on a weekly basis, but from afar, and usually in motion. Stopping and observing the magnificent work of Mother Nature when it is blown up so big is both educational and fascinating.”

La obra representa una garza azul grande posada sobre un poste de madera en un bayou de Houston, con los rascacielos de la ciudad alzándose al fondo. La garza azul grande es la garza de mayor tamaño nativa de Norteamérica, con una longitud de cabeza a cola de entre tres y cinco pies, y una envergadura de entre cinco y seis pies y medio. Se los puede identificar por las plumas de sus alas y su vientre, que presentan un degradado del gris al azul celeste, así como por las plumas negras y ornamentales de sus cabezas, que se extienden desde por encima de los ojos hasta la parte posterior de la cabeza. Observe cómo Ronen pintó el borde del cuadro simulando vigas de madera, sobre las cuales el pico y la cola de la garza proyectan su sombra, creando así un efecto tridimensional. Ronen dijo: “La garza azul es un ave relativamente común en nuestra zona, que probablemente vemos cada semana, aunque desde la distancia y, por lo general, en movimiento.
