Howard Sherman, born in Houston in 1970, is a painter who often combines several art historical styles. Sherman said of his practice: “I take several historical ideologies and put them in a blender.” His work is in the permanent collections of the Art Museum of Southeast Texas in Beaumont; the Art Museum of South Texas in Corpus Christi; Lonestar College – North Harris County; and more. Here is a mixed media piece, which is when an artwork is made with more than one medium or material, created with acrylic paint and marker on canvas that measures over nine feet tall and seven-and-a-half feet wide. The painting features various styles throughout its layers. For example, the background, or the layer furthest from the viewer, seems to be a wall that has been painted over multiple times. As the layers come to the closer to the viewer, it becomes harder to see which layer is above or under the other. Throughout are cartoonish designs, such as thick lines and symbols like stars and a nipple. However, their contexts have been painted over. Is this a wall to a building? The title hints that viewers should have more questions than answers.
