Alicia Eggert, born in New Jersey in 1981, is a professor of art at the University of North Texas. Her artworks are in the collections of the: Smithsonian American Art Museum; Light Art Collection in Amsterdam; New Holland Island in St. Petersburg; Long Now Foundation; and more. Eggert is known for her large, text-based neon signs that feature excerpts from a variety of sources, such as Plato and Immanuel Kant. Here is one of the neon signs that measures over eight feet tall and 15 feet wide within Hobby Airport. It features the statement “THIS PRESENT MOMENT USED TO BE THE UNIMAGINABLE FUTURE” originally written by US writer Stewart Brand in pink; after a few moments, the sign changes to the statement “THIS MOMENT USED TO BE THE FUTURE” by shutting off “PRESENT” and “UNIMAGINABLE” before turning completely off for a short time. The neon tubes, fabricated by Amy Enlow of AV Neon Signs, are mounted on a steel frame painted white. Other fabrication assistance was provided by Yara Jones, Austin Lewis, and Jessica Green.
